Volunteer Spotlight

Monday, February 18, 2019

Joan Leaman is the volunteer coordinator for West Grove United Methodist, a host congregation for Family Promise that coordinates with 3 other congregations to provide meals. She has been involved since the start of the program in Southern Chester County. Her involvement started when she was serving on the West Grove mission team and learned that Family Promise needed to engage host churches as the program prepared to launch in 2015.  At that time, West Grove had new facilities and Joan had thought they could be used to help people who need housing.

“When facing homelessness, children and adult lives are up-ended and their ability to function as a cohesive family is challenged. Nothing is normal about their routine. As volunteers, we need to appreciate differing styles of parenting, be supportive and caring,”

According to Joan, Family Promise is a life changing program for the families. Joan gives very generously of her time, not only serving as the coordinator but also volunteering many hours driving families to appointments, work and daycare. A special highlight during her tenure as a volunteer was seeing the nuptials of a family and having her husband officiate at the ceremony. ”It was touching to hear the vows they wrote,” she said. For Joan, being a volunteer is an honor. The team of volunteers she leads has a process that ensures the families have a variety of meals. Working with Family Promise provides her and volunteers tangible opportunities to live out Matthew 25:35-40
